Print the Contents of a Folder PDF Print E-mail

Have you ever needed to print the names of files inside a folder? Not print the actual items, but print out a list of what's inside the folder. For example, let's say a co-worker sends you a folder with 20 documents and it's your job to go through each one. So what do you do? Like most people you'd go "old school" and write down on a piece of paper each file name so you can "cross if off your list" when you're done. This tip will show you how to display the contents of the folder in a text file which you can print or easily copy into Excel.

Although the tip is actually an old techie DOS command, don't let that scare you -- It's actually very simple.

Start by opening your command prompt, found in your Accessories folder. This will open a small DOS window or command prompt. Next, you need to "navigate" to the directory (i.e. folder) you want to see. Do this by entering "CD Name-of-folder". For example, if the folder, named learnit, is on my desktop I'd type: CD desktop/learnit. In techie speak, the CD is for "change directory". Once inside your directory, type the command: dir /b > inside.txt

Viola, that's it. This will automatically create a text file inside the folder with a list of all the contents.

One final note, although the dir command is relatively simple, using the command prompt is not. However, now that you know the functionality exists you can ask a "techie" to do it for you.

Microsoft’s Enhanced Mitigation Experience Toolkit (EMET), a simple but powerful configuration utility that allows you to harden applications that weren’t originally designed to take advantage of Windows security features. EMET version 2 was released a few months ago and runs on all currently supported Windows client and server editions, including Windows 7, Windows Vista (Service Pack 1 or later), Windows XP (Service Pack 3), Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Server 2008, and Windows Server 2003 (Service Pack 1 or later).

This is a good way to configure Windows applications to be hardened against Zero Day attacks. See Ed Bott's article by clicking here.
